ASKO Dishwasher Not Starting: Common Causes

Full guide

What to check before you call

Safe observations first. Stop if anything involves smoke, gas, water near electricity, or a panel you would need to remove.

08 sections

An ASKO dishwasher that will not start most often has a simple setting or supply behind it: the door was not latched in time after pressing Start/Stop, delayed start is active, the Child Lock is on, or power or water is not reaching the unit. Work through those in order, write down any code on the display, and book a diagnosis if the dishwasher still does nothing.

How do you start an ASKO dishwasher correctly?

The ASKO US cleaning guide lists a “unit does not start” entry that begins with the sequence itself: press Start/Stop and close the door within 4 seconds. If the door is closed first and the button pressed afterward, or if the door closes too slowly, the program may not begin. Try the sequence again deliberately, with the racks pushed in so nothing keeps the door from closing fully. The same entry tells you to verify that delayed start is not activated, since a dishwasher waiting for its programmed time looks exactly like one that will not run.

How do you check power to an ASKO dishwasher?

Start by verifying that the unit is properly plugged in and that the display lights up.

For stops during a cycle, the guide says to verify that the unit is properly plugged in. The design guide describes a 115 VAC, 60 Hz, 15 amp dedicated circuit for US dishwashers. If nothing lights on the display, check whether a breaker has tripped and whether a built-in unit’s supply is still on. The installation instructions say not to use an extension cord. A single breaker reset is reasonable; repeated trips mean stop and call.

For a dishwasher that beeps at random, the guide advises disconnecting power at the breaker for 10 seconds, then reconnecting. If the beeping continues, contact service. A power reset may clear a one-time glitch but does not repair a fault, so use it once rather than as a routine.

Controls that do not respond

If the keypads seem dead, the guide gives several steps: do not tap, hold a finger on each keypad for about 1 second, clean the panel with a damp cloth, close and reopen the door, and check that Child Lock is off. Wipe only with a damp cloth, with the dishwasher off and no household cleaners, and keep the keypads free of grease. Dried grease and moisture on the panel are an ordinary reason for a keypad to ignore a press.

Can the water supply keep an ASKO dishwasher from starting?

It can. Check that the shut-off valve is open and read the display for an error code, writing down F4 if it appears.

The guide’s no-water entry says to verify the shut-off valve is open and to have a plumber check supply pressure, quoted as 20-120 psi, and to look at the display for an error code. If F4 appears, write it down, press and hold Start/Stop for 5 seconds to reset, and contact service if it returns. If the pump runs continuously, turn power and water off to the unit and contact customer care.

Not starting versus stopping mid-cycle

These two problems get mixed up, but they point to different checks. A dishwasher that never begins is about the start sequence, settings, power and the display. A dishwasher that begins and then stops is covered by a separate entry in the guide: verify that it is plugged in, use less detergent, and make sure the filters and the drain are clear of debris. Excess detergent and clogged filters can interrupt a program, so a stop partway through is not automatically an electrical fault. Deciding which of the two you have saves time, because the fix for one does nothing for the other.

A third look-alike is a machine that seems not to turn off. On models with Turbo Dry, the guide notes the fan may keep running for 2 hours or more after the wash cycle ends, which is why the unit can seem to be still running. To cancel a program, hold Start/Stop for 3 seconds.

What each result tells you

Behavior What it can point to What you can check
Nothing happens after pressing Start/Stop Door not closed within 4 seconds Press Start/Stop, then close the door right away
Display lit, no wash begins Delayed start or Child Lock Cancel delay, check Child Lock
No lights at all Power not reaching the unit Check the plug and the breaker once
Keypad ignores presses Grease or moisture on the panel Wipe with a damp cloth, reopen the door
Code F4 shows A fault the machine recorded Note it, hold Start/Stop for 5 seconds, call if it returns

A dishwasher that starts after a corrected sequence proves the cause was operating or a setting. One that ignores every step proves the simple causes are spent; it does not say which part has failed.

When to stop

Stop troubleshooting if the breaker trips again, the unit smells hot, or water is on the floor near electrical parts. Do not open the panel, and shut off the supply valve if there is any leak. Note the service number, item number and serial number on the rating plate inside the dishwasher before you call, as the design guide advises.

Take a clear photo of the display if a code is showing, because the code can clear once power is cut. Keep notes short and factual: what you pressed, in what order, and what the unit did after each step.

If the dishwasher is a built-in model, also confirm that the door closes squarely against the tub. The guide lists a door that does not close as a separate problem: reposition the racks and check for dish interference.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the dishwasher beep and not run?

The guide suggests cutting power at the breaker for 10 seconds, and contacting service if the beeping continues.

Could delayed start be the reason?

Yes. Check that the delay is off and that the program was not scheduled for later.

Is the water supply part of a starting problem?

It can be. Confirm the shut-off valve is open and read any message on the display.

What do I need ready for a service call?

The model information from the rating plate, any code shown and the steps already tried.
